Chapter Fourteen
It wasn’t until Ellie had changed into jeans, a thick sweater, and Welly boots that she realized coming along with Oliver meant meeting Jemima. What was this woman, beset by grief and sadness and yet once a socialite, actually going to be like?
Soon enough they were all back in Oliver’s car, driving to his sister’s house, Abby and Marmite in the back seat. Marmite was hanging his head over the front seat and too late Ellie saw a wet thread of drool drip onto Oliver’s shoulder. He glanced back, frowning.
“Is that what I thought it was?”
“If you thought it was a sign of Marmite’s excitement and devotion, then yes.”
“That’s one way of putting it, I suppose.” He grimaced, but Ellie didn’t think he actually minded the drool. At least, not too much. Then Marmite licked his ear, and Oliver jerked away.
“He obviously likes you,” Ellie said and hid her smile, turning to look out the window at the damp fields glittering under a golden sun. It was crisp and clear, with the tiniest hint of spring in the air, a freshness to the breeze, a promise of warmth in the winter sunlight. Her heart gave a little flutter of excitement, and she knew that she was glad to be there. Glad to be with Oliver.
A few minutes later Oliver turning into the sweeping drive of a house that nearly rivaled Willoughby Manor in terms of its size and grandeur. Ellie swallowed hard, and exchanged a look with Abby who seemed similarly awed.
“Nice place,” Ellie murmured and Oliver gave a little shrug.
“It’s the old rectory. A bit much considering Tobias is an only child, but Jemima...” He shrugged, sighing, and Ellie recalled him confessing that he hadn’t been that close to his sister.
Oliver climbed out of the car, and feeling a bit intimidated by the huge house, Ellie let Marmite out the back, hiding behind her dog, which wasn’t that hard considering his size and exuberance.
“I’m guessing Marmite shouldn’t go inside,” she said, and Oliver looked apologetic.
“It would probably be easier...”
“No problem. I’ll tie him up for now.” Jemima’s lawn had the same jewel-green velvet look of Willoughby Manor’s, as was. Ellie didn’t want to risk messing that up either.
She spent as long as she could dealing with Marmite, which took some doing anyway because after being confined in the car for twenty minutes, and with acres of gorgeous lawn stretching in every direction, her dog did not take kindly to being tied to a gate post.
Oliver and Abby were waiting for her, so Ellie knew she couldn’t stall forever. What was she worried about, anyway? She didn’t care what Jemima thought of her. But everything about this situation was new and nerve-wracking, and she was going into it on little sleep.
“Are you all right?” Oliver asked, giving her a concerned smile, and Ellie nodded. She didn’t even know what she was nervous about. Abby didn’t seem nervous; she only looked impatient, clearly wanting to see Tobias and tackle the desolation of whatever.
